OfficeReadyTM - All Versions FAQs

Q. Have the OfficeReady Templates been checked for viruses?

A. The OfficeReady templates have been thoroughly checked for viruses by the leading anti-virus software products. You can use these templates with confidence. The Office 2000 templates also include digital signatures to further represent this protection. When you make an initial attempt to load an OfficeReady file in Office 2000, you will be warned that the file contains macros. To enable applications from Canon Software Publishing as a trusted source, check the box titled "Always trust macros from this source". This action lets you select the Enable Macros button. When you select the Enable Macros button, the template loads and future templates with the Canon Software Publishing signature will be loaded without any prompting action on the part of Office. If you do not accept the macros in this manner, the template files will be loaded without their macros and will not work correctly.

By default, Office 97 macro security is much less stringent. When Office 97 senses macros in a file, it prompts the user to "enable" or "disable" the macros. Again, the OfficeReady files will not work correctly unless you enable the macros. To check your security level in Office 97, go to Tools, select Options and click the General tab.

Q. What is the difference between a compact and a custom type of installation?

A. The two installations differ simply in the number of components that they install. You have the two following types of installation options:
  • Compact
  • Custom/Full Install

Compact Installation:

In this type of installation, the program will be installed with the minimum number of required options. This type of installation is recommended for systems with a shortage of disk space. The components that are installed as part of the compact installation are the OfficeReady Template Browser and the appropriate Add-ins, along with a few pictures. The templates, thumbnails and previews, which take up disk space, are left on the CD.

Custom Installation:

In this type of installation, you can choose the options that you want to install. This type of installation is recommended for advanced users. The OfficeReady Template Browser, thumbnails and all the appropriate Add-ins are installed by default.

Q. How does the OfficeReady setup deal with stand-alone versions of Word, Excel or PowerPoint?

A. The OfficeReady setup checks for stand-alone versions of Word, Excel or PowerPoint. In such cases, the setup informs the user that the application was not fully installed and the OfficeReady Add-in (and Templates) will not be installed for that application.
For example, if you have Microsoft PowerPoint (the stand-alone version) installed on your machine but have Word and Excel installed as part of Office 97 or 2000, the OfficeReady Add-in and Templates will not be installed for PowerPoint. The installation program will advise you accordingly during installation.

Q. After installing the OfficeReady Add-ins, is it likely that Excel and Word will become much slower?

A. Yes. Word and Excel are noticeably slower to load when the OfficeReady add-ins are loaded. You can make this less noticeable by disabling the splash screen. To do this, from within Word or Excel, click on the boxed checkmark on the OfficeReady toolbar and clear the 'Display OfficeReady Splash Screen at Startup' option.

Q. Can I have OfficeReady start by default when Microsoft Word starts?

A. Yes. To have the OfficeReady add-in launch automatically every time you start Microsoft Word, go to the OfficeReady Toolbar, select Options, Select the General tab, and check Autostart OfficeReady when Word Starts. By default, this box is unchecked. If you check this option, the full Word Add-in and the complete toolbar will be automatically loaded whenever the programs are launched.
You can setup Autostart for Excel and PowerPoint as well by performing the same steps in each application.

Q. Why do I get a startup error when I load the OfficeReady Add-in for Word?

A. In a rare number of instances, Word and Excel will generate a startup error when the OfficeReady add-ins are loaded. This typically indicates a faulty installation of Office. Perhaps, the easiest remedy is to remove the add-ins and access the templates through the File | New menu option. Very rarely, the VBA dll may be faulty. In this case, the symptom is that the templates do not initialize properly when opened. The solution is to uninstall and then re-install Office.
In Word, the Normal.dot template (which is the default template in Word) is occasionally very large, possibly as a result of storing a photo in it. This will sometimes interfere with OfficeReady (or any add-in) loading. The solution is to exit Word, delete the Normal.dot and start Word again. Word creates another default Normal.dot and functions properly.

Q. Why don't my documents have the fonts shown in the Text Styles sample box?

A. You may not have installed all the fonts that the templates use.

Q. The PowerPoint Add-in does not seem to be working properly on my machine. What can I do about it?

A. For the OfficeReady Add-in for Microsoft PowerPoint to function properly, it is necessary that you have Microsoft Office 97 Service Release 1 or greater installed on your machine. You can download the Service Releases from the Microsoft site. The following message will prompt you to do so:

"The OfficeReady add-in for PowerPoint may not function correctly since you do not have MS Office 97 Service Release 1 (SR-1) or greater installed. Refer to http://www.microsoft.com/office or http://officeupdate.microsoft.com for additional information and to download Office Service Releases."

Q. "When using the Toggle Screen/Print Utility, I get an error saying that the add-in is unable to toggle to the screen/print version."

A. Note that the Toggle Screen/Print feature works only with OfficeReady templates. This error occurs because you are trying to use this feature with templates other than OfficeReady templates.

The following error message is displayed when you use the Toggle screen/print feature with non-OfficeReady templates:

"This feature works only with OfficeReady templates. The add-in is unable to toggle to the screen/print version."

Q. "When I try to load up the OfficeReady Template Browser, I find that it takes a long time. Is there any way to get the Template Browser to load faster?"

A. Yes. To get the OfficeReady Template Browser to load faster, select a view that does not use thumbnails; i.e. choose "large icon", "small icon", "list", or the "details" view. To open the OfficeReady Template Browser in the Large Icon View, click View | Large Icon.
The OfficeReady Template Browser takes a considerable amount of time to start up on some machines. This is because the Template Browser loads up in the List View with the preview pane loaded. The delay is caused because of the overhead required to open the preview file.

Q. How do I disable loading the OfficeReady Template Browser if there is a problem?

A. If you are having a problem running the OfficeReady Template Browser, do the following:
  • In any of the Add-ins (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Photo), click "Set Options".
  • In the Options dialog box, clear the "Use OfficeReady Browser".
  • Click OK.

Henceforth, the native File | New dialog box will be loaded every time the OfficeReady Template Browser is invoked.

Q. Where can I find the OfficeReady templates on the disk?

A. In a custom type of installation, the folder where OfficeReady templates are stored is specified during setup. In a compact type of installation, the OfficeReady content, i.e. thumbnails, Previews and templates are left on the CD.

Q. How does the OfficeReady Template Browser deal with different desktop settings?

A. For high resolution video setting, the OfficeReady Template Browser loads up in the List View, with a preview image in the Preview Pane, by default. For a screen resolution of 640x 480, or 800x600, the OfficeReady Template Browser loads up in the List View and, in the Preview Pane, it displays a thumbnail image instead of the preview image. Also, for these lower resolutions, the OfficeReady Template Browser loads up maximized.

Q. I see a thumbnail image in the Preview Pane instead of the preview image.

A. For a screen resolution of 640x480 and 800x600, the OfficeReady Template Browser loads up in the List View and it displays a thumbnail image instead of the preview image in the Preview Pane. For all other resolutions, reducing the preview pane (by dragging its handles), beyond a certain minimum threshold causes the preview pane to display a thumbnail image instead of a preview image.

Q. When I start the OfficeReady Template Browser, I get an error "Unable to read Templates path"?

A. In a compact type of installation, the OfficeReady content, i.e. templates, previews and thumbnails are left on the CD. This error occurs if you have taken the CD out of your drive. To circumvent the error, put the CD back into your drive and click Retry.
To specify another path for the templates, click New. In the compact installation, if you have left the OfficeReady content on the CD, then you can only change the drive letter. You cannot change the path. However, if the templates are on the hard disk, you can change the drive and the path.

Q. The folder list on the left-hand side takes up a lot of space on the screen. Can I hide the folder list?

A. Yes. To hide the folder list, click "Folder List" on the OfficeReady Template Browser toolbar or select "View", "Folder List" menu option. You can also hide the folder list by clicking on it, which is present next to the Folder List on the left-hand side.

Q. Why is it that the search operation in OfficeReady Template Browser is very slow?

A. If you have a version of Windows 95 with Internet Explorer 3.x or lower, the "find" operation is slower because it uses the Visual Basic Object Model to search for templates. This is the reason that even the accessing of properties of a document is slow.
The OfficeReady Template Browser does not always load up with the List View and the Preview Pane on. The OfficeReady Template Browser is launched with the default start-up screen (i.e. with the List View and the Preview Pane on) the first time only. After the first launch, the Template Browser always saves its settings on exit. The next time the OfficeReady Template Browser is launched, it loads with previously saved settings.

Q. How does the Auto Correct option in the Photo Editor adjust photos?

A. The Auto Correct option uses two forms of correction - a ratio system between light and dark points of the photo, and a white / black balance where the software makes the lightest point of the image white, and the darkest point of the image black. The result is a photo corrected for color, brightness and contrast.

Q. Can I use the OfficeReady Photo Editor to edit photos that I have inserted into Word in the "traditional" manner?

A. Yes. However, first note that images inserted by OfficeReady are actually treated as "objects" and not as "pictures" - which is how Word treats them. OfficeReady inserts them as a specific object format called "OfficeReady Photo Object". To insert an editable picture without using OfficeReady, you would need to select Insert, Object and then select OfficeReady Photo Object as the object type. This will create a new "Image Socket" that will then use the Photo Editor.

Q. Why will "Manage My Web" not give me access to my Web page editing options?

A. To access the Web page version with the Admin button, you need the URL e-mailed to you after uploading an asset. The Admin button gives you the option to delete assets from your Web page and provides a choice of themes for your page.
