Q. Why won't WebRecord Pro fetch web pages?
A. If WebRecord Pro seems to be responsive, but does not even attempt to fetch web pages, check to see if fetching is paused. When fetching is set to "paused", the message "Network fetching paused" is displayed in the status line, and the menu option Fetch>Pause is checked. To resume fetching, select Fetch/Pause again.
Otherwise, if your browser is successfully loading web pages, but WebRecord Pro is failing to fetch pages that are added to its Print List, this is most likely caused by your Proxy Settings.
Some Internet connections are made through a "proxy server". In this case, WebRecord Pro, like your browser, needs to be given some information about the server. WebRecord Pro offers some shortcuts to help you get your proxy settings right first time. You can choose to:
- use your Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0+ settings;
- use your Netscape Navigator 2.0+ settings; or
- use settings you specify in WebRecord Pro's own Settings dialog box.
You can specify these settings during installation, or later by running WebRecord Pro and choosing Options>Settings>Proxies.
Use the following guide to help you determine which of the proxy options best suits you:
- if you have Internet Explorer 3.0+ installed on your computer, and it is able to access the Internet correctly, select the "Use Internet Explorer 3.0+ settings" option;
- otherwise, if you have Netscape 2.0+ installed on your computer, and it is able to access the Internet correctly, select the "Use Netscape 2.0+ proxy settings" option;
- otherwise, select the "Use these proxy settings" option and consult your system administrator or Internet service provider regarding the correct values to enter.
If you are unable to get the second or third options to work, you will need to install Internet Explorer 3.0+, make sure it is working correctly, and then select the "Use Internet Explorer 3.0+ settings" option.
Note: If you are using SOCKS to connect to a proxy, and you have selected "Use these proxy settings", you MUST enter your proxy host name in the "Using this proxy server" box on the Proxies tab of the Settings dialog box. Follow the format below:
socks=http://hostname:port
Q. Can I schedule WebRecord Pro to re-fetch and update a web site even if I need to enter a password?
A. Yes, by selecting OPTIONS, SETTINGS, and then PASSWORDS, you can save a list of passwords for designated web sites. This enables you to update most password protected sites, even when you are away from your computer.
Q. Can I specify pages to be fetched that contain certain images or specific text?
A. Yes. This is called "Filtering". Select FETCH, ADVANCED FETCH and indicate your key word or images under EDIT. You can choose saved print lists to be filtered or apply the filter to all list. The "Custom" filter will be applied only once, where "Saved" filters (as indicated by a name you've assigned it) will be applied until changed or deleted. For further assistance with this powerful feature, please refer to the "Help" button located in the Advanced Fetch window.
Q. Why does my system become unresponsive, appearing as though it's crashed, while fetching a requested page?
A. When you issue an automated Fetch command for a web page containing over 100 links, WebRecord Pro performs intensive operations to confirm and commence fetching. As a result, depending on the speed of your computer, WebRecord Pro may appear to have crashed because the window is not being updated. Given time, WebRecord Pro will become responsive again to user interaction. If this problem causes undesired delays in your work, try scheduling an automatic fetch of these pages during lower traffic hours (i.e., between 1:00 AM and 4:00 AM).
Q. Is there an easy way to fetch a related set of links from a page?
A. If you have a page containing many links, and want to fetch some links from just one area of this page, you can add the base page to the Print List, and then use the mouse to drag out a rectangle on the page in the Print Preview. The URLs for all links partly or wholly within the rectangle are added to the Print List (except for those already in the Print List). Many web pages are laid out with information (and links) in blocks, and this technique makes it easy to gather the linked pages you are interested in while ignoring others.
Q. How can I stop WebRecord Pro from fetching pages as soon as I start it?
A. When you start WebRecord Pro it automatically loads the most recently used Print List and starts to fetch any checked, unfetched pages. You can stop WebRecord Pro fetching by choosing the menu option Fetch>Cancel, or by unchecking all items in the Print List (Edit>Untick All). If you want to ensure that WebRecord Pro won't start fetching next time you start it you can also clear the Print List (File>New) before exiting WebRecord Pro.
Q. How can I stop an automated fetch of linked pages?
A. Choose the menu option Fetch>Cancel. You can temporarily suspend an automated fetch by choosing the menu option Fetch>Pause.
Q. Am I able to review the web sites I have selected before I print them?
A. Yes. A PRINT PREVIEW window automatically loads when the application starts. The window is updated every time you add a new web page to your print list. If you prefer, PRINT PREVIEW can be hidden until you have completed your print list by going to OPTIONS< then de-selecting SHOW PRINT PREVIEW.
Q. What if I want to rearrange the order of the web sites on the print list?
A. Simply click on the title of the wb page you want to move, then drag it to its new location.
Q. Can I change the appearance of my print list?
A. You can easily manipulate text colors and background options to customize your print lists. In addition, you can omit images and even print two or three columns per page to save time and paper.
Q. My print preview does not appear.
A. This occurs when one or more images have been incorrectly referenced in an HTMS file. To correct this problem, de-select any file(s) with the missing image(s). The remainder of the page will then be properly displayed.
Q. Pages I visited with the browser do not display in WebRecord Pro.
A. Normally, pages visited with Netscape Navigator 2.0+ or Internet Explorer 3.0+ are automatically added to the WebRecord Pro print list. Occasionally, however, this process stops working. In this case, either copy and paste the required URL from the browser "Location" box, or use one of the methods of adding to print lists as described in the WebRecord Pro on-line help.
Q. Can I start a new Print List while my automated fetch is executing a previously scheduled activity?
A. Starting a new Print List while an automatic fetch is activated will result in the new items being added to the currently active fetch. To prevent this from occurring, wait until fetch activity is complete, or issue the Fetch Cancel command to halt automated fetching.
Q. How can I stop WebRecord Pro fetching every page I visit in my browser?
A. If you would like to have WebRecord Pro selectively fetch only some of the pages you visit in your browser, in the Options menu turn Auto Add URLs off and turn Auto Tick New URLs on. Then, whenever you browse to an interesting page, you can make WebRecord Pro fetch it by simply clicking on the History List button in the WebRecord Pro toolbar.
Q. Why doesn't my Advanced Fetch work?
A. The WebRecord Pro Advanced Fetch option is powerful, but can be difficult to use. If it does not appear to be producing the results you expect, try to verify manually that the pages you expect it to find actually exist. If they do, then try setting the Show: filter to [All] while you get the Fetch: selection and Follow: filter working, and then adjust the Show: filter as necessary.
Q. I selected several items in my Print List using up/down arrow keys, but it didn't make the same changes in Print Preview. How can I choose them to be selected in both Print List and Print Preview?
A. Items scheduled using the up/down arrows will only be reflected in the mode in which you selected them. Clicking on the item with your mouse will select the item(s) in both areas.
Q. Why is there a bit of my page cut off when it's printed?
A. Some printer and printer driver combinations may crop (trim) part of each page printed from WebRecord Pro, especially if Enhanced print style is selected. To avoid this, choose Options >Settings> Document Presentation and check Wide margins. To make WebRecord Pro run more quickly:
- Turn off "Show Print Preview" until you have listed the required web pages. This will eliminate repeated display updates each time a page is added to the Print List or the list is rearranged.
- Turn on "Lock Print Preview" until you want the preview updated. This will eliminate repeated display updates each time a page is added to the Print List or the list is rearranged.
- Turn off "Auto Tick New URLs" to stop WebRecord Pro from fetching data and images for pages added to the Print List each time you surf to a new page in your browser.
- Specify "Standard" mode for printing (in the "Print-out Mode" box on the Options>Settings>Document Presentation tab).
- Turn on "Fast Preview" for "Standard" print mode (on the Options>Settings>Document Presentation tab). Use "Fixed Width" preview mode with a small page size, so that the page previews can be drawn more quickly. This does not affect the size of the printed pages.
- Check "Omit Images" on the Options>Settings>Style Sheet panel to stop images being drawn and re-drawn while you are deciding which pages you want to print.
Q. I received an "Out of Memory" error during installation. What do I do now?
A.
1. Halt the installation process.
2. Restart Windows
3. Close any applications that you currently have running. If you are not sure which programs are running, check the status bar. To close an application, place the pointer on the status bar and right-click the mouse. Select CLOSE from the pop-up menu.
4. Reinstall WebRecord Pro. If the problem persists, upgrade the memory on your PC.
Q. I have installed WebRecord Pro, but it won't start. What do I do now?
A. Reinstall WebRecord Pro. However, before installing, verify that your PC meets the minimum system requirements recommended to install and run WebRecord Pro. After reinstalling, make sure you have closed all other applications before launching.
Q. How do I schedule WebRecord Pro to update a saved print list?
A. As Web pages change (some do on a daily basis), you can schedule the pages to be fetched at a scheduled time to run only once, daily, or weekly. WebRecord Pro will allow you to re-fetch, update, save and even print a designated list of web sites at any time. Select FILE, SCHEDULE, and then ADD the saved print list you would like to re-fetch. Designate the frequency by choosing ONCE< DAILY< or WEEKLY and complete the options accordingly.
Q. I deleted a web page from a print list, but have now decided I want it on my list. How do I get the page back on my print list?
A. If you are still on that page in the Internet, hit the "Reload" button on your browser. As the page is reloaed, it will re-fetch the page and add it to your print list. If you've already moved to another page in the Internet, go back to the page you want and it will re-fetch that page for you.
Q. Does saving the Print List save the page contents?
A. By default, saving the Print List saves only the URLs (addresses) for the pages in the Print List. After saving the Print List, when you next load the Print List, WebRecord Pro needs to access the Internet to download the contents of the checked pages in your Print List.
In the Save As dialog box, if you specify Save as type: as Print List Files With Data, the page contents for all checked (and fetched) pages currently in the Print List are included in the save file. When you next open this file, the page contents will be restored from the file. (If any checked pages were not completely fetched when you saved the Print List file, WebRecord will attempt to go out and fetch these pages when the file is opened.)
If you save a Print List with data, you can open it later even when you don't have an Internet connection established, and print it or export it for offline browsing.
Q. Why does printing take such a long time?
A. Enhanced printing mode is designed to produce high-quality printouts suitable for inclusion in presentations and reports but can be slow. To speed up printing, specify Standard mode for printing (in the Print-out Mode: box on the Options>Settings>Document Presentation tab). Standard mode printing does not include web page background images or colors, or WebRecord Pro page textures.
Slow printing has several possible causes:
- The printer or printer driver you are using may not respond well to the large volume of data received when you send an Enhanced print request. If you change this to a Standard print request, you are likely to get a quicker result. Because you are most likely to experience this problem when printing to a PostScript or a networked printer, WebRecord Pro enforces Standard print mode for PostScript printers.
- Another cause of slow printing is having spooling disabled. For faster WebRecord Pro printing on local printers, you should enable spooling in the printer's Properties dialog box. Choose Start>Settings>Printers, right-click the printer and select Properties>Details (or Properties>Scheduling in Windows NT4), then click the Spool Settings button (not in Windows NT4). Choose "Spool print jobs so program finishes printing faster".
- In some cases, printing of Enhanced pages can be speeded up by enabling a process called "banding". When banding is enabled, data for printouts is sent to the printer in bands or sections, rather than all at once. Note, however, that not all printer drivers support banding.
- You can enable banding for certain printer drivers by editing the WebRecord.ini file in the WebRecord2Pro program directory. Look for a string that resembles the following: >DRIVER>=new; where >DRIVER> is the internal name of the printer driver. WebRecord Pro adds a line like this to the .ini file when you send an Enhanced print to an unfamiliar printer driver. To enable banding for this printer driver, change the word "new" to "bandingok".
Q. Why doesn't WebRecord Pro show the page for my search request?
A. This is probably because the page you used to specify the search used a method called "POST" to return details to the server. In the case of using POST, there is no practical method for printing the resulting page with WebRecord Pro.
There are two methods that a browser can use to request an HTML document - GET and POST. The GET method is used for all normal document requests. A request with a GET method is what the browser sends to the Web server to request a document when the user clicks on a link or enters a URL.
If a request for a web page is constructed based on the content of an HTML form, the form itself specifies whether the request will be a GET or a POST. GET is usually used only for small requests, because of size limitations. The process of encoding the name/value pair data and then appending it to the end of the URL is what happens when a browser submits a GET method HTML form. As an example, the Alta Vista search engine at http://www.altavist A: com/ uses the GET method.
If a POST method is used, the browser creates a query string based on the values the user typed in the form fields and sends this string (which may be large) as the content part of an HTTP POST command. As an example, some of the forms in the US Patent and Trademark Office site at http://www.uspto.gov/ use the POST method.
WebRecord Pro snoops all URL requests sent by Netscape and Internet Explorer, so can duplicate GET method requests so as to fetch pages into the print list. However, browsers do not notify applications such as WebRecord Pro of POST method requests, so there is no way for WebRecord Pro to fetch the requested pages. Even if WebRecord Pro could discover the POST data (there are ways it could do this under some circumstances) other problems could occur if the POST data is re-sent.
Q. Why do I see a grey rectangle in place of an image?
A. If WebRecord Pro cannot find an image, or if the image is in a n unsupported file format, WebRecord Pro displays a grey rectangle with the same dimensions as the missing image. Sometimes you may be able to fix this by making WebRecord Pro re-fetch the affected pages, although this won't work if the image link specified in the page is in error. To re-fetch one or more pages, select the pages in the Print List and then choose the menu option Fetch>Re-fetch. Also, if requested to omit images, WebRecord Pro prints grey rectangles (containing the text "Image omitted"). You can do this for selected pages, or all pages in the Print List, by checking Omit images in Edit>Properties>Style Sheet or Options>Settings>Style Sheet respectively.
Q. Why don't I get backgrounds (colors, textures) on my PostScript printer?
A. For performance reasons, WebRecord Pro enforces the Standard print style when printing to PostScript printers. This Standard style does not include background colors and textures. Many networked printers in offices are PostScript printers.
Q. Why is there a bit of my page cut off when it's printed?
A. Some printer and printer driver combinations may crop (trim) part of each page printed from WebRecord Pro, especially if Enhanced print style is selected. To avoid this, choose Options>Settings>Document Presentation and check Wide margins.
Q. I added a page to the Print List using the History button, but it shows only a short empty rectangle in the Print Preview. Why?
A. This is probably because you visited a frames page in your browser, and consequently the URL at the top of the history list is for one individual frame in the main frame-set. When a frames page is loaded, both Internet Explorer and Netscape report the URL for the main frame-set, and the URLs for all the frames contained within in it. When WebRecord Pro detects all these URLs, it has no real way to determine whether the browser loaded them one at a time, or all at once within a frame-set. Therefore it adds all of the URLs to its history list. In this situation you can usually add the page you want to the Print List by clicking on the down-arrow next to the History button, and then choosing the entry that represents the frame-set URL.
Q. WebRecord Pro doesn't show all the pages in the Print Preview - some appear as plain grey. Why?
A. This can happen if your disk is full, and WebRecord Pro runs out of room to create temporary files containing page images for the Print Preview. If so, this can be fixed by freeing up some disk space, or by decreasing the size of the pages shown in the Print Preview. You can do this by narrowing the WebRecord Pro window, or resizing the pages directly if the Print Preview is in fixed-width mode.
Q. Why doesn't my web page look the same in WebRecord Pro and my browser?
A. There are a number of reasons why this could be:
- WebRecord Pro displays only the first frame of animated GIF images. Many pages rely on animated GIFs to enhance their impact or highlight information, and this effect can be changed or lost when these animations are not shown completely.
- WebRecord Pro does not support, and ignores any usage of JavaScript, Java, or Plug-ins. Pages that use these features will necessarily look different in WebRecord Pro - usually with information apparently missing or incorrectly displayed. Also, some servers first interrogate the browser (ie, WebRecord Pro in this instance) and supply different pages depending on the browsers reported capabilities.
- If the page displayed in the browser was supplied as a result of filling in a "forms" page that uses the POST method, WebRecord Pro will not be able to capture a copy of the page. (See above - "Why doesn't WebRecord Pro show the page for my search request?")
- You can change formatting settings in WebRecord Pro that affect the way pages are displayed. In particular, the Base font size (set in Options>Settings>Style Sheet) controls the relative size of text in pages in the Print Preview and in print-outs. If you make the text bigger or smaller than usual, this will affect the way the text is laid out, and can change the overall look of the page. If you specify any or all of the Hide page backgrounds, All text in black, and Omit images (in Edit>Properties>Style Sheet or Options>Settings>Style Sheet), naturally the pages will look different than they do in the browser.
- Some pages, especially those containing frames or tables, may have a displayed width greater than that of your browser window. In these cases, you can scroll the page left and right in your browser window in order to read the entire page. Since printed pages cannot be scrolled, WebRecord Pro formats, and if necessary scales down images and/or text, so as to ensure the entire page content fits within the printed width. WebRecord Pro also composes frames pages without scroll bars on any of the component frames. This can make a significant difference to the way some pages look.
- Finally, the specification for formatting HTML contains ambiguities and omissions, especially in the case of unusual or illegal HTML, as found in many web pages. There are a number of particular errors in HTML that are detected and corrected by Internet Explorer and Netscape (eg, improperly terminated comments) which WebRecord Pro attempts to treat in the same manner. However, there will still be cases that are handled in one fashion by your browser and in another by WebRecord Pro. Usually WebRecord Pro will produce a page, which is similar in layout to that intended by its author, even if it doesn't look exactly the same when viewed by your browser.
Q. Can I print to non-Canon printers?
A. WebRecord Pro is optimized for some Canon printers, but can be used with nearly all printers.
Q. Why are some images missing from my print-out if I exit WebRecord Pro before printing has completed?
A. For Enhanced style printing, WebRecord Pro usually uses a print processor that reads the image files from WebRecord Pro's disk cache as required as each page is printed. If you exit WebRecord Pro before printing is finished, the disk cache is cleared and the images are no longer available for printing. You can avoid this by not exiting WebRecord Pro while printing is still in progress. This is not an issue when using Standard style printing.
Q. Why doesn't the Print Preview change to reflect changes in the Print List?
A. Check to see that the Print Preview is not locked. If it is, the padlock icon in the toolbar will be closed, and a faint shading of dots is overlaid on the previewed pages. To unlock the Print Preview, click on the Lock button in the toolbar or select the menu option: Options>Lock Print Preview.
Q. Why can the Print Preview be locked?
A. When you want to reorganize the URLs in the Print List, you might want to lock the Print Preview first (via menu Options>Lock Print Preview or the toolbar button) to avoid repeated display updates each time a page is added to the Print List or the list is re-arranged. This can be useful if you want to inspect a Print List gathered as the result of a WebRecord Pro automated fetch and uncheck or move some pages before printing or saving the Print List. If it's not locked, you will need to wait for the Print Preview to be updated after each change before you can inspect the next page.
Don't forget to unlock the Print Preview when you've finished working with it and want it to show the changes again.
Q. Why does Netscape crash when I try to send mail when WebRecord Pro is running?
A. WebRecord Pro uses DDE to communicate with your browser to track the URLs you browse to in case you also want them loaded into WebRecord Pro.
There is a bug in Netscape mail that causes it to crash if any program attempts DDE communications with it when it sends HTML-formatted messages. If this affects you, you will either need to remember to not to run WebRecord Pro when sending mail, or turn off the HTML formatting in Netscape (through Navigator's Edit>Preferences>Mail & Groups >Messages option).
Q. Why is text missing from my print-outs?
A. Many web page authors specify white text on black for their pages. If you are printing in Standard mode, or in Enhanced mode with Hide page backgrounds turned on, any white or light-colored text will be invisible. You can rectify this by setting All text in black on for selected pages (Edit>Properties>Style Sheet), or set all pages to that method (Options>Settings>Style Sheet).
Q. How can I sort the Print List?
A. You can sort all the items in the Print List by any column. If you click on a column header button, all the items in the Print List are sorted in ascending order according to the values in the selected column. If you click on the same column header button again, the Print List is sorted again in descending order, and then ascending, and so on.
Items with identical values in the sort column do not have their order re-arranged by the sort.
You can also use the Sort and Sort All options in the Edit menu for additional sorting operations on the Print List.
Q. Why doesn't my scheduled job run?
A. In order for a scheduled job to run, your computer, printer (if applicable) and modem (if applicable) must be turned on.
If your scheduled job appears to be running but not producing the results you expect, try running the same fetching and/or printing interactively to see what results occur.
Q. Why am I unable to print a single page with my Canon Bubblejet printer when in Enhanced Mode?
A. There is a line in the WebRecord.ini file that is required for the BJC-7000 printer. In some cases, this line; "CJRSTR=nopp" may cause minor issues with other printers.
If you are unable to print a single page in Enhanced printing mode, and do not have a BJC-7000 printer, locate the WebRecord.ini file (default location is: C:\Program Files\WebRecord2Pro), edit the file (normally double-clicking on it will automatically open it up in Notepad or Wordpad), and type in REM followed by a space at the beginning of the "CJRSTR=nopp" line.
Below on the left is the file before modification, and on the right is the modified file. Note the last line:
